Hepatitis: Ways To Spot the Symptoms
The most common types of hepatitis are viral. Most people know about hepatitis A, B, and C, but there are many more—including D, E, and G.
## What symptoms should alert you?
The most common symptoms of hepatitis are:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and vomiting
- Growing fatigue
- Pain in the stomach and right hypochondrium
- Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
- An increase in liver size (when the liver is bulging out of the torso)
Hepatitis C and G are the most insidious as=== they don't show any symptoms until the moment when they become irreversible. The exception to this is weakness, which is often taken as a sign of fatigue or stress and not something more serious.
The single reliable method for diagnosis of hepatitis is medical test. An optimal approach is to have a PCR test to identify RNA virus fragments and an immunology test to detect antibodies to the virus. It is also necessary to have a biochemical blood test to determine the level of bilirubin and enzymes (for example, ALT and AST).
## Understanding Lab Tests
__Hepatitis А__
This type of hepatitis is characterized by low white blood cell count, high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), decreased albumin, and bilirubin.
__Hepatitis В__
HBsAg is the most used test for diagnosing this virus, which can be detected as early as during the incubation period. The presence of antibodies can signal that the patient already had hepatitis B. The vaccination against hepatitis B is obligatory for children, but adults can also get vaccinated if the test shows the absence of antibodies.
It is particularly relevant for young people who regularly exercise, especially for those in extreme sports, those who have multiple sex partners, those who work with food, and those employed in the personal care and services industry including beauty salons and massage parlors.
__Hepatitis C__
The hepatitis C virus is transmitted primarily through the blood during blood transfusions, surgeries, dental interventions, some cosmetic procedures, manicures, and less frequently through intercourse. The RNA virus test helps detect the disease at an early stage and prevents the disease from becoming chronic.
__Hepatitis D and G__
At the acute phase of the disease, the test shows a high concentration of IgM antibodies. After that, the test can show the presence of other antibodies of type igG in the following months.
__Hepatitis E__
The antibody test is the primary lab method for hepatitis E diagnostics, showing the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies.
__How Is Hepatitis Treated?__
The doctor will prescribe specific medicine or a combination of medicines. Generally, the modern approach for the treatment of hepatitis includes antiviral medications and vitamin complexes to support the liver. When treatment starts at the early stage, the recovery rate is very high and reaches 99 %.
Besides therapy, the patient should stay on a diet: have smaller portions as well as eating boiled, stewed, and steamed dishes. It is essential to have enough water to help the body remove toxins.
