C-Section: Are There Any Risks for the Baby?
## There is a choice
The approach to surgical delivery differs from country to country. For example, in the US a C-section may be performed at a woman's request, though the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that the doctor be heavily involved in making the decision. The surgery is performed either under general anesthesia or using epidural anesthesia, which allows the woman to be conscious at the moment the baby is born. C-sections are often performed on women who previously traditionally gave birth and had complications.
## Advantages of C-section
One of the clear advantages is ===the minimal risk of birth injuries for the baby and the mother. The course of the operation is usually predictable. The baby does not travel through narrow birth canals, so neck or head injuries are avoided.
There is practically no danger of hypoxia since the cord entanglement of the baby is ruled out. Often, a C-section is performed during natural childbirth, if the health and life of the child are in danger.
## Drawbacks of the surgery
Despite the advantages of the C-section, some downsides must be taken into consideration by both the mother and her doctor before the birth takes place.
In the first days of life, these babies are more vulnerable to infections, while babies born naturally receive the necessary bacteria from the mother to fight them off.
The newborn may experience tremors in the legs and arms, but these quickly go away.
After birth, babies do not breastfeed well, so they are given formula instead. It is the mother's breast milk that is the key to the baby's strong immune system.
Very rarely, exposure to anesthesia can lead to respiratory failure.
Babies also experience digestive problems, allergic reactions and sleep disturbances, increased excitability, and hyperactivity.
> There is a belief that surgery harms the further development of the child. However, this is not proven. There are different situations, as in the case of natural childbirth, but more often than not, babies born via a C-section grow and develop as well as their peers delivered naturally.
## How to reduce the negative consequences of C-section delivery
To improve the immunity of your newborn, put him or her on the mother's chest so that the baby will get the necessary bacteria from her skin. The mother should breastfeed the baby if possible, as even a few drops of colostrum will be good for his or her digestive system.
Natural birth with a normal pregnancy is the best option for both baby and mom, but sometimes a C-section may be the only option. This very surgery has given many women, who are contraindicated to natural childbirth, an opportunity to become mothers, and even more than once. It is important that in preparation for the surgery and throughout the process the mother should trust her doctors and follow their recommendations. A well-organized post-surgery period is also very important for the state of the mother and child.
