Sex and Menstruation: To Have Sex or Abstain?
## Arguments against
__High risk of infection__
During this period, the cervix is ajar and its epithelium is loose, and there is a very high risk of pathogenic [infections](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=7) entering the uterus and appendages. Moreover, if a woman already has any infectious diseases, they are exacerbated during her period. The risk of [STDs](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=202) during this period is high not only for women but also for men — blood infections can easily get into the microflora of the male genital organs. This problem can be partially solved with a condom. However, a condom will not prevent the next issue that we will discuss.
__Risk of developing endometriosis__
Sexual intercourse interferes with the natural flow of blood, artificially "driving" it back. The escaping blood gets back into the fallopian tubes and the abdominal cavity, which researchers suspect provokes [endometriosis](#https://ul.orna.me/KOge/community?discussion=15980 "endometriosis"). Although there is not a definite link, there is still a risk.
__Intensifies bleeding__
This is true, so in a period of heavy bleeding, it is better not to aggravate the situation.
## Arguments in favor
__Sex ===shortens menstrual periods__
Because of uterus contractions during intercourse and increased blood circulation during orgasm, menstruation ends one day earlier on average when the woman has engaged in sex.
__Sex has a positive effect on the woman's psyche__
During menstruation, a woman often feels heightened irritability and excitability, and endorphins released during sexual intercourse have a beneficial effect on the psychological state of a woman.
__During sex, menstrual pain is reduced__
This is true. At the moment of orgasm, oxytocin and endorphin are produced. Additionally, the woman can experience some physical activity. Together, these factors reduce pain and improve mood.
## Can I get pregnant during my period?
Yes, although the possibility is much lower than during [ovulation](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=4). Some sperm can live in a woman's body for 3–7 days. And if intercourse took place during one of the last days of menstruation, it is quite possible to get pregnant. The risk of conception is especially high in women with an unstable cycle. In addition, the menstrual cycle may be affected by taking hormones, [stress](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=19), and a change of climate.
