Top 8 Reasons for Delay in Menstruation

## Any of the following can be considered a menstrual disorder - Systematic delays in menstruation for more than 5 days - Regularly having a shorter menstrual cycle by more than 5 days - Heavier or lighter menstrual bleeding - Unusual discomfort or stronger pain accompanying menstruation - Bleeding after the period (insignificant blood discharge during ovulation is normal) - Stopping to have a period before menopause ## Minor causes The list of the minor causes which do not require medical treatment includes getting used to the new climate and stress. Traveling, flying to another time zone and sudden climate change can lead to a shorter or longer menstrual cycle. When you feel stressed, your body produces too many stress hormones that delay ovulation so that the period is delayed. Taking some rest, having regular walks, good sleep, and ensuring a proper diet will help to fix that. ## Don't neglect It If none of the above causes have changed for you but your menstrual cycle is still fluctuating, you need to examine possible medical problems. In most cases, the changes in the menstrual cycle are caused by changes in hormonal levels. These changes can result from the hormonal imbalance of women's sex hormones as well as changes in other hormones. One of the frequent causes is cervical diseases, inflammation of the uterus and its appendages, polyps, and cysts. Induced or accidental abortions are also bad for the uterus and cause delays in periods or a shorter menstrual cycle starting in 10–14 days. If this is the case, doctors most often recommend controlling the cycle for 6 months before taking any steps unless there are any inflammations or infections. There is a good chance that everything will return to normal without treatment. Other reasons for shorter or longer cycles include diseases of the thyroid gland and adrenal glands. In such a case, it is recommended to consult an endocrinologist and have a blood test for hormones. Your body takes extreme diets, fasting, and poor diet as a bad sign when pregnancy is not wanted. For this reason, it switches into self-preservation mode, which leads to a delay in the period or ceases it all together. When you get your body mass back to normal, the cycle will restore. Taking birth control pills or quitting them can also impact your cycle, although hormonal pills are often prescribed to get the cycle back to normal. In this case, you can consult with your doctor if you can change the medicine or stop taking contraceptives. Don't panic if you missed your cycle once. Instead, keep a diary, registering all unusual changes in your body. These records will help your doctor more easily identify and eliminate the cause of cycle disorders.
