Modern Ways to Fight Migraine That You Probably Didn’t Know About

## Getting rid of pain Strong drugs are designed to relieve migraine attacks. In most cases, it is best to take them as soon as symptoms appear. The newest drugs to treat acute conditions include: - 5-HT1f receptor agonist drugs, such as Lasmiditan, to relieve pain and other unpleasant migraine symptoms. Prophylactic use of Lasmiditan can reduce the number of attacks in the long term. - CGRP receptor blockers (Rimegepant and Ubrogepant) block the CGRP molecule that causes blood vessels to dilate during migraine and cause pain. They begin to take effect within 60 minutes. - Dihydroergotamine mesylate nasal spray is a new drug containing dihydroergotamine (DHE). DHE is an ergot alkaloid used to treat migraine. The nasal form of the drug provides better absorption of the substance. - Celecoxib has been used to treat arthritis since 1998, but recent studies have shown that it can help manage migraines. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a liquid form of Celecoxib (Elixib) to treat migraine. > It's important to understand that any medication should only be taken when recommended by your doctor, taking into account your health condition and possible side effects! ## Preventive approach Preventive medications are designed to prevent the onset of migraine attacks===. CGRP inhibitors — including Eptinezumab, Erenumab, Galkanezumab and Freemanzumab — are a new class of drugs that block the action of the CGRP peptide that causes migraine pain. The more CGRP is released, the more excruciating and severe the pain. The patient receives the medication by injection once a month with a pen-like device. ## High-tech Neuromodulators are devices that increase or decrease the activity of the nervous system with an electric current, thus relieving migraine pain. The devices come in the form of a headband, wristband, or handheld electrode. They can be controlled from a smartphone. SPG stimulation is a technique where doctors implant the device through the mouth into the cheekbone, where it stimulates a bundle of nerve cells called the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG). This method is considered promising in the treatment of migraine headaches but requires more research. ## Botox Botox has been used against headaches for about ten years. In recent years, doctors have been using it more and more frequently, since it is very effective for some patients. If a patient has a chronic migraine (headache of 15 or more days a month), botox is injected into points around the head and neck. It relieves muscle tension, thus preventing the onset of a migraine. The whole procedure takes about 20 minutes and has an effect for three months.
