How Does the Color of Our Skin Change When We Are Sick?
## Yellowness
Hepatitis A is called jaundice for a reason: its striking symptom is a yellowing of the skin, the whites of the eyes, the nails, and the mucous membranes. But we are not necessarily talking about hepatitis: any disorders of the liver and gallbladder can lead to yellow or yellowish-green hue of the skin. However, if you are taking beta-carotene supplements, the yellowness may be due to taking too much. In that case, correcting the daily dose will quickly get rid of the problem.
If the skin becomes waxy-smooth and acquires a slight but noticeable yellow tint, but the cheeks are "burning with blush", it is worth checking for tuberculosis as soon as possible.
## Redness
Persistent reddish skin on the face is a sign ===of high blood pressure. Spots and irregular redness can occur due to allergies, rosacea, and immune system disorders. If the redness is in the shape of a butterfly — covers the nose and cheeks — it is one of the symptoms of lupus.
## Lividity
Bruises that appear from the slightest pressure or for no reason at all are a reason to check blood clotting and the condition of blood vessels.
A bluish color of the nails usually signals a heart problem, and blue lips indicate a lung problem.
## Paleness
If you notice that the skin looks lighter than usual, it is worth checking your blood iron levels, as pallor may be a symptom of developing anemia.
## Earthiness
Greyish-brown skin tinge occurs when there is immunodeficiency, cancer development and endocrine problems, and this change is more typical for women. In rare cases, it may be associated with chronic stress.
## Spots
Pigment spots can appear on their own with age and with excessive exposure to the sun without protection. But if both of these factors are absent, pigmentation can be a sign of adrenal dysfunction.
Dark circles under the eyes signal problems with the kidneys, especially if accompanied by general edema.
Red spots on the feet and palms are caused by liver dysfunction.
