Unexpected Links Between Ozempic and Pregnancy
## Ozempic increases the risk of unplanned pregnancy
Semaglutide, the drug's active ingredient, affects the digestive system by slowing the rate of gastric emptying after a meal. This makes it harder for medications, including birth control pills, to be absorbed. And if the hormones in them are not fully absorbed, oral contraceptives become less effective.
> The effectiveness of other types of hormonal contraception, such as patches or IUDs, is not affected by taking Ozempic.
## Losing excess weight increases fertility
Excess weight is one of the frequent causes of=== [infertility](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=187). [Obesity](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=167) is related to excessive growth of the endometrium, increased [insulin](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarybiomarker?id=67) resistance, and the development of [polycystic ovarian syndrome](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=57) – all of which prevents ovulation. Logically, by reducing body weight and decreasing body fat, Ozempic thereby increases fertility.
## Ozempic can be dangerous to the baby
Given that taking Ozempic increases the chances of conception, a logical question arises: what happens if a woman, unaware she is pregnant, continues to take the drug? Currently, all semaglutide-containing drugs come with a warning about the potential risk of fetal harm. This means that women should only continue taking Ozempic during pregnancy if the potential benefits justify the possible consequences and only if prescribed by a doctor.
