Headaches and Menstruation: Looking for a Connection
## What does it have to do with hormones?
Statistics show that almost half of women of childbearing age experience headaches before and during menstruation. It appears when there are changes in [estrogen](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarybiomarker?id=26) levels. These hormones can trigger a complex chain of reactions that includes nerves, blood vessels, and muscles. The pain can be caused by natural fluctuations in estrogen levels during the cycle, as well as infertility treatment, [pregnancy](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=3), birth control pills, [menopause](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=55), and hormone replacement therapy.
## What it looks like
Menstrual headaches generally occur two days before menstruation begins, and last for three days after. As a rule, the headache hurts ===on one side with throbbing pain. The pain increases with physical or mental exertion, may be worsened by bright light or loud sounds, may have an aura (problems with vision before and during the attack), and is accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
In some women, the problem appeared along with menstruation at a young age, while in others it appears much later. Oftentimes, doctors note the connection of migraine with gynecological problems such as endometriosis or ovarian dysfunction. In addition, it can also indicate endocrinological diseases, such as adenoma of the pituitary gland. This is why it is important not to suffer in silence, writing off your condition to "one of those days," but to undergo a complete medical examination and understand the causes of what is happening.
## Plan of action
Even before visiting your doctor, you should start keeping a diary, noting which days of the cycle the headache appeared, how intense it was, in which part of the head was localized, and how long it lasted. Your notes will not only help your doctor to correctly diagnose you but also prescribe a preventive pain relief medication.
Some medications can alleviate the condition during this period. Triptans, which act on the mechanism of seizure development, are recognized as the most effective. But they also have several limitations, so nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics are often prescribed.
Women are sometimes offered hormonal therapy, but it is not suitable for everyone. Such medications are not recommended for migraine with aura, as they can increase the risk of stroke and blood clots.
Non-conventional methods have also proven to be very effective in treating hormonal headaches such as acupuncture, massage, and biofeedback.
## Lifestyle change
Of course, it is worth making changes to your lifestyle. Get regular and unbroken sleep, follow a diet that minimizes the consumption of tyramine-containing products (cocoa, citrus fruits, red wine, cheeses, tomatoes, and chocolate), eat regularly, and do fitness such as walking, swimming, and biking.
