How to Get Rid of Psoriasis
## Three ways
Treatment is prescribed based on the type and severity of the disease, as well as the area of the affected skin. Generally, start with a mild treatment like topical creams. After that, proceed to more intensive therapy if necessary.
## Topical therapy
Creams are usually prescribed for mild to moderate [psoriasis](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=148). There are a significant number of such preparations, and all of them differ in their effects. Moisturizing agents are prescribed if the disease spreads.
Steroid creams or ointments reduce inflammation, relieve itching and slow down the production of skin cells. These are typically used if the disease is mild to moderate in severity. Creams are vitamin D analogs. They are used along with or instead of steroid ointments. They slow down the production of skin cells and have an anti-inflammatory effect.
Calcineurin inhibitors reduce the activity of the immune system and help reduce inflammation. They are suitable for sensitive areas including the face, genitals and skin folds.
Tar is the oldest remedy and clears the skin of psoriatic rashes as well as relieves inflammation and itching.
Ditranol effectively inhibits the growth of skin cells and has few side effects.
## Phototherapy
This type of treatment is based ===on exposure to natural and artificial light, and it has multiple therapy options.
Ultraviolet B (UVB) phototherapy slows down the production of skin cells and is used if psoriasis does not respond to topical treatment.
Psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA). First, the patient takes a pill containing psoralen compounds, or the drug is applied directly to the skin, making it more sensitive to light. The skin is then exposed to ultraviolet A (UVA) light. The method is used for severe psoriasis that cannot be managed otherwise.
## Pills, capsules, and injections
If other treatments have failed, patients are prescribed oral medications and injections. They are very effective, but often have serious side effects including nausea, increased blood pressure, liver damage, and dry skin.
Persistent results can be obtained thanks to injections with monoclonal antibodies, which block immune cells that play a major role in the development of psoriasis. The disadvantages of such treatment include its high cost.
As an auxiliary therapy, oral intake of vitamins A and D is prescribed.
> Some medications for the treatment of psoriasis are prohibited during pregnancy, as they are harmful to the baby. Even after the end of treatment, it is recommended to protect yourself for at least 6 months.
## Modern approach
Scientists around the world are looking for ways to completely defeat psoriasis. In 2022, several innovative FDA-approved drugs emerged at once: Roflumilast, Tapinarof, Deucravacitinib, and Boehringer Ingelheim's Spesolimab. All have shown a new level of efficacy while having significantly fewer side effects. For example, Roflumilast and Tapinarof are the first non-steroidal drugs for plaque psoriasis, and Spesolimab was the first treatment for generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) flares in adults.
