How To Live After a Heart Attack
## Nutrition
The patient's task is to reduce weight and help the regeneration of the damaged myocardial area. It is necessary to reduce the content of fats in the diet, giving preference to high-fiber foods, including whole-grain products and at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Every day you should eat lean meats and poultry, and it is even better to eat fatty fish. Foods rich in potassium (spinach, bananas, potatoes, apricots) would do you good.
You should avoid anything that causes fermentation in the gastrointestinal tract including coffee, strong tea, and soft drinks. 2–3 times a week you can afford to have ===a glass of dry wine or 50 grams of strong drink, but beer and cocktails should be renounced completely. If you are taking any phenobarbitals, sedatives, diuretics, or hypnotics, you should avoid alcohol completely. Important note: after myocardial infarction you need to limit fluid intake including water and juices, not exceeding 1 liter per day. You should also limit salt intake as much as possible.
## Activity
Studies have shown that physical fitness in adult patients is most effectively restored with moderate, but regular activity: this equates to 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week in the first month after a heart attack or about 20 minutes per day. Walking at a moderate pace is considered optimal. Before and after the walk, your blood pressure should be measured to monitor how your body tolerates the exercise.
Gradually, the pace and duration of the walk should be increased. If the doctor does not object, and the condition of your heart allows it, it would be useful to add another daily cardio exercise such as swimming, walking on a treadmill, or cycling. If the patient was previously engaged in sports on a regular basis, it is possible to gradually return to the usual exercises, but this should be done under strict health supervision and with the permission of the doctor.
If the patient has other diseases, a specialist should also be consulted in addition to the cardiologist.
## What about sex?
After a heart attack, there are no restrictions on sexual activity; the only factor to consider is how you feel. Sex itself is not harmful to the body — on the contrary, a full and intimate life helps to restore the body and improve morale as well as increases the oxygenation of the blood, which benefits the heart. However, you should avoid arousal stimulants and having sex for long periods of time.
## How to go on living
Full recovery after a heart attack means that the ECG, blood pressure and heart rate have returned to normal levels. In some patients, this happens a few months after the heart attack, and in lucky patients, it takes a few weeks. However, in some cases, the process of full recovery takes up to a year.
A heart attack does not define the rest of your life, and the main recommendation is to lead a healthy lifestyle, take medications recommended by your doctor and monitor your condition regularly.
