COVID-19 and Pregnancy: What You Need To Know
Pregnant women make up a very small percentage of those infected and recovered from COVID-19, so it is too early to draw general conclusions. However, the scientific community is currently inclined to believe that pregnancy does not increase the risks of negative consequences and does not aggravate the course of the disease.
American scientists recently released results from one of the largest coronavirus studies—Birth and Infant Outcomes Following Laboratory-Confirmed SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Pregnancy. Data was collected from clinics in 13 states.===Most pregnant women diagnosed with coronavirus were asymptomatic. In 80 percent of patients, the disease was mild, and only a few required intensive therapy.
__Fact 1__
The virus is not transmitted from mother to fetus. Only isolated cases of newborn infection have been registered worldwide (and it is still unclear whether infection came from the mother or the hospital staff).
__Fact 2__
Coronavirus does not affect the safety of having a natural birth. In other words, if a woman's condition allows natural childbirth, doctors do not see any obstacles to this. If a cesarean section was planned before the disease, then it gets performed at the appointed time.
__Fact 3__
Many drugs prescribed by doctors for the treatment of COVID-19 can hurt the fetus. If a woman took them as a treatment for COVID-19, childbirth should occur at least 4 months after the date of the negative test result. Doctors don’t prescribe these drugs if the woman gets ill when already pregnant.
__Fact 4__
Coronavirus slightly increases the risk of preterm birth. Labor began prematurely for 13 percent of pregnant women diagnosed with COVID-19 in the United States, while the average figure is 10.2 percent.
__Fact 5__
Complications and a more severe course of coronavirus infection occur in overweight pregnant women (which correlates with data showing that overweight people suffer more from the disease). Therefore, it is especially important during a pandemic to monitor and reduce excess weight.
__Fact 6__
Studies show that the likelihood of contracting coronavirus during pregnancy is higher. Scientists attribute this to the relative vulnerability of the woman's immune system during this period.
__Fact 7__
For obvious reasons studies related to the reaction of pregnant women to the COVID-19 vaccine (any) have not been carried out, but the WHO recommends refraining from vaccination 1–3 months before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and lactation.
__Fact 8__
In exceptional cases, the doctor may recommend early termination of pregnancy in a patient with coronavirus, namely:
- With the progression of a chronic disease
- If the life of the expectant mother is at risk (respiratory failure or heavy bleeding).
