Sex During Pregnancy: Yes or No?
## Physiological aspects
There is not just one answer to the question, since a lot depends on the course of pregnancy, the mother’s health history, and current state of health. When in doubt, it is always best to consult your doctor to be able to make a confident decision.
However, studies claim that sex even beneficial for expectant mothers, because ===it helps to avoid certain complications of pregnancy (for example, early toxicosis and gestosis) in the future.
Worries about injuring the baby are unfounded. The baby is safely protected by the uterus, amniotic fluid, and bladder fluid.
## Psychological aspects
Psychologists believe that sex is crucial for a woman when she is pregnant. This is a time of drastic hormonal changes, and sex makes her feel attractive, desired, and loved.
However, we are all different—some women’s libido almost completely fades away, and sometimes even leads to disgust at the thought of sex. In this situation, it is especially important that the man understands the circumstances. Gentle caresses, compliments, touches, and massages will help the woman to relax and enjoy physical contact. Over time, most likely, the attraction will recover.
## When is sex not a good idea?
In the following cases, it is advisable to give up sex:
- Miscarriages during previous pregnancies (miscarriages, premature birth)
- Threat of pregnancy termination (diagnosed by a doctor)
- Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy
- Painful sensations during intercourse
- Diagnosis of placenta previa
- Pregnancy with twins, triplets, and a large number of embryos
In all other cases, sex is not dangerous for either the mother or the child. Take a look at our example to understand how physiological body changes will affect sexuality and libido.
## First trimester (1–12 weeks)
At this time, most pregnant women periodically experience malaise, increasing fatigue, and nausea. It is important to understand how sexual activity affects general well-being. If intimacy brings relief and joy, then of course you shouldn't give it up. But if sex aggravates the discomfort, it is better to postpone sexual activity for several weeks until the woman's well-being improves.
## Second trimester (13–27 weeks)
During this period, the pregnant woman usually feels better: the toxicosis has already receded, and the belly is still quite small and does not interfere. Some note the most vivid sensations when making love during this period since both men and women are already accustomed to the new state and have stopped worrying about a possible miscarriage or other complications.
## Third trimester (28 weeks and beyond)
An enlarging belly creates certain difficulties, but it is easy to find positions in which both will be comfortable. The missionary position, however, is really not recommended, as it can cause compression syndrome of the inferior vena cava, which disrupts the blood supply to the fetus.
