What Makes the Heart Beat Faster?
## Why do heart rates become elevated?
60–90 beats per minute is a normal heart rate. More frequent contractions of the heart indicate tachycardia. This is not a one-off disease, but rather a symptom of some problems.
An increase in heart rate is linked to hormonal fluctuations, especially in women in menopause and with iron deficiency anemia, as well as=== the manifestation of hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis.
Attacks of a rapid heartbeat can be a sign of a congenital malformation of the cardiac conduction system called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which today is successfully treated.
When the heart rate is not only fast but also irregular, it means there are single or multiple extraordinary contractions of the heart or its chambers. This is the cause of extrasystole, which is found in 60–70 % of people over 50 years old. In a healthy person, up to 200 extrasystoles per day are considered the norm. It is dangerous for people with cardiac pathologies.
Irregular heart contractions are most frequently caused by atrial fibrillation, which affects 1–2 % of the world's population. It often becomes a source of blood clots and ischemic stroke as well as contributes to the progression of heart failure.
To identify the reasons for abnormal frequency and rhythm of the pulse, an ECG is done, and in some ECG daily monitoring is necessary.
## Is it possible to slow down your heart rate on your own?
Various reflex influences help to reduce tachycardia. You can press on the point above the collarbone at the bottom of the neck for 10 seconds. You can also breathe in air and hold your breath for a few seconds. These methods work with occasional heart palpitations, but if they occur at rest, you need to see a doctor.
