Should Boys Be Circumcised?
In the United States, this tradition came from Victorian England. It became widely popular during World War I when men joining the military were circumcised for protection from sexually transmitted diseases. After World War II, circumcision became a part of medical insurance, and doctors have started to circumcise newborn boys immediately after birth. So what are the pros and cons of this procedure?
## Obvious advantages
First, circumcision is recommended for those who live in a hot climate. This is because circumcised boys are better protected against inflammations when it is hot outside, and it makes it easier for them to keep hygiene.
Circumcision is sometimes necessary for medical reasons such as phimosis or paraphimosis.
Circumcision is an effective prevention against ===genitourinary infections. In addition, it helps adults decrease the risks of getting infected with HPV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
The World Health Organization recommends circumcision as a prevention against HIV. During the circumcision, the foreskin is removed together with Langerhans cells that are the most susceptible to this virus.
Circumcision also decreases the risk of a malignant tumor on the glans penis.
## Disadvantages
After surgery, the glans penis may feel dry, which may require the application of moisturizing agents. However, the body will adapt after some time.
There is a risk of reduced penile sensitivity.
## What is better for sexual partners?
Women with a partner who is circumcised have a lower risk of vaginal yeast infection, cervical cancer, and various inflammations. Circumcision also helps prevent premature ejaculation.
With regard to circumcision in children, parents must make this decision after carefully weighing the pros and cons. No matter what, it is important to take your child to urologist and follow the doctor's recommendations.
