What is the Best Form of Laundry Detergent?

## Laundry powder The classic old-school option, laundry powder is primarily appreciated for its low cost and generally high effectiveness when washing with hot water. However, that's where the benefits end. The downside is that granules may take the entire wash cycle to dissolve, especially if the powder has absorbed moisture and formed clumps, or if you're washing in cold water. As a result, some powder particles may remain on the fabric and, with regular skin contact, provoke allergic reactions. Another negative of laundry powder is that it inevitably produces dust, which can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract when poured from the package into the washing machine or even just during storage. To avoid inhaling detergent dust, it should be stored in an airtight container and kept not in the bathroom or kitchen (as is often the case), but in a separate utility room that you only access occasionally. > Constant inhalation of laundry powder dust can cause respiratory irritation, allergies (runny nose, coughing, sneezing), and worsen asthma and bronchitis. ## Liquid laundry gel Laundry gel=== is a solution of surfactants, ready to use right out of the bottle. Unlike powders, gels are milder in their cleaning action, dissolve better in water, leave no residue on fabric, and don't irritate the respiratory system. Another plus is that gels are easier to measure precisely, as containers usually come with a measuring cap. Overall, except for the price, gels outperform traditional powders in nearly every aspect. However, they may still contain preservatives and fragrances that can trigger allergies. So it's best to be cautious and avoid contact with skin and eyes. > When washing in hot water, gels are less effective than powders! ## Laundry capsules Capsules are the most convenient to use and very effective. They dissolve well in water, don’t produce dust, and aren't harmful to the skin, as the detergent is sealed within a protective film. However, they're not recommended for households with small children: since capsules were introduced in 2010, there have been numerous reported cases of poisoning in children worldwide. Kids often mistake the colorful capsules for candy and swallow them, with serious consequences. In the US alone, more than 17,000 such incidents were reported in 2012–2013. Another downside of capsules is their high cost compared to both powders and gels. ## Conclusion Each popular type of laundry detergent has its pros and cons: __Powder__: Cheap and effective, especially in hot water, but it creates dust, doesn't dissolve well in cold water, and is hazardous for people with allergies or asthma. __Gel:__ Gentler on fabrics, leaves no residue, but less effective in hot water, more expensive, and can also cause allergic reactions if it comes into contact with skin. __Capsules:__ The most convenient and safe for adults, but less economical and potentially dangerous for small children.
