Psychologist, Psychotherapist, or Psychiatrist: Who To Go to With Problems?

## Psychologist __What is it?__ A specialist with an advanced degree in psychology, who can work in a wide range of areas including Gestalt psychology, behaviorism, humanistic psychology, cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalysis, art therapy, etc. A psychologist is not a doctor and cannot diagnose and/or prescribe drugs. They do not work with the disease — they work with healthy people who are dealing with stress, relationship issues with family and friends, trouble with decision making, conflicts, and more. The basis of the psychologist's work is training, testing, and counseling — both individual and group. __When should you go to a psychologist?__ If you are going through a difficult divorce, have lost ===a loved one, have a difficult situation at work with your boss or colleagues, cannot control your spending and have constant financial problems, have difficult relationships with relatives, have depression or fears. Child psychologists help determine whether children are ready for school by examining how developed, assiduous, and attentive they are. ## Psychotherapist __What is it?__ A specialist with a medical degree who deals with borderline disorders. A psychotherapist's expertise includes painful addictions, phobias, depression, anxiety disorders, and neurosis. The therapist can provide counseling, use hypnosis techniques, psychotherapeutic techniques, and prescribe medication. A psychotherapist is authorized to diagnose severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, but cannot treat them. In this case, he or she refers the patient to a psychiatrist __When should you go to a psychotherapist?__ A psychotherapist should be consulted in cases of neurosis, stuttering, bedwetting, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, insomnia, and depression. ## Psychiatrist __What is it?__ This is a doctor with a college degree in psychiatry. A psychiatrist can treat serious illnesses such as schizophrenia, psychopathy, paranoia, manic-depressive syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and more. He or she can prescribe medications, issue opinions on mental health and legal capacity, and conduct official examinations. Psychiatrists are more likely to work in specialized clinics and psychiatric wards. __When should you go to a psychiatrist?__ A psychiatrist should be consulted in case of suspected severe mental disorders such as voices in the head, obsessive states, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts. It is also worth making an appointment with a psychiatrist in case of sudden and frequent mood swings, sleep disorders, and prolonged depression. ## Conclusion You go to a psychologist in case of personal problems, to a psychotherapist for neuroses and problems of psychosomatic nature, and to a psychiatrist for suspicion of serious mental disorders. Psychiatrists should be consulted if it is necessary to add medication to psychological treatment. Psychiatrists do not conduct psychological consultations but carry out the pharmacological part of therapy.
