Skin Issues in Infants: When Should You Be Worried?

## No cause for concern Babies are waking up to a whole new world when they first arrive in the world, and this includes changes in their skin. These are normal physiological changes and are not caused by any disease. Gradually the baby gets used to the new conditions, and his or her skin becomes clean and smooth. - Yellow tint: the so-called jaundice of newborns — is associated with the destruction of fetal hemoglobin (fetal hemoglobin), appears on day 2–5 after birth, and passes within a month. - Physiological erythema: redness of the skin associated with dilated blood vessels, passes within one week. After the erythema disappears, there may be flaking of the skin for a few days. - Milia: small white spots, often located on the baby's nose, are a consequence of hormonal restructuring. They gradually disappear. Never try to rub or squeeze them as this can ===damage the skin and lead to infection and scarring. ## What to worry about The following symptoms are usually caused by improper care of the baby. Make sure to take care of these issues as soon as possible so the problem doesn’t worsen. - Sweating: redness of the skin, caused by overheating. To prevent sweating, it is important not to wrap the baby up too warmly when indoors, and to try to maintain a room temperature of 68–72 degrees F. - Diaper dermatitis: skin irritation due to prolonged contact with urine and feces. To prevent diaper rash make sure to change the diaper in time, leave the baby without a diaper for a short period if possible, use wet wipes only when it is impossible to wash the baby with running water, and treat the skin with special products designed for prevention of diaper rash.
