Should You Use Paraffin Candles?
## A dangerous pairing
Paraffin is a product of petroleum refining, and as it burns, a paraffin candle releases a huge amount of harmful substances into the environment. This includes carcinogens such as benzene and toluene, which can cause asthma and cancer.
When benzene enters the lungs, a person experiences dizziness, weakness, and begins to have trouble sleeping. Prolonged exposure to benzene can lead to problems with the liver, kidneys, and other organs. This carcinogen negatively affects the circulatory and nervous systems.
Toluene causes acute and chronic poisoning. It affects the endocrine and circulatory systems and accumulates in CNS cells.
It is especially dangerous if ===a paraffin candle has a lead wick because when heated it releases toxic substances that depress the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Such candles will not only not help you relax, but on the contrary, will cause irritation and reduce efficiency.
## Poisonous fragrance
Aromatic paraffin candles are particularly dangerous. Instead of oils, they contain artificial fragrances, which are even more toxic than paraffin when burned. Prolonged exposure in a room with such incense can be equated to prolonged inhalation of cigarette smoke. And if you regularly light paraffin-scented candles, you can provoke the development of [chronic](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=78) diseases such as bronchial [asthma](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=177), eczema, and other [skin](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=23) conditions.
It is easy to determine if a candle is a paraffin, as they are brittle and crumbly. Do not use such candles more than a few times a month. If a paraffin candle is placed on your table at a restaurant, move it away from you and anyone else you are with.
## Safe alternative
Eco- and bio-trends can be used instead. Choose candles made from natural beeswax, soy, coconut, or palm wax. Some are made from vegetable stearin, which is produced by pressing the chilled palm or coconut oil.
If you like aromatherapy, choose candles with natural oils. Beeswax candles are good because they don't need any aroma additives since they smell like propolis and honey. Wax and herbal candles are great options for relaxation.
