Endometriosis — A Mystery Disease

Endometriosis is a mystery disease where endometrial tissue, the lining of the uterine cavity, grows beyond its limits. Scientists and doctors cannot explain the cause of this disease. Most often, it is a consequence of a hormonal imbalance where estrogen levels increase and a progesterone deficiency develops. The disease may also develop due to genetic predisposition. Sometimes endometriosis develops after a medical abortion, surgical treatment of the cervix, or a cesarean section. ## What are the symptoms? In the earliest stages, the disease can be almost asymptomatic. A woman may easily ignore any unpleasant symptoms, or confuse them with ordinary menstrual discomfort. There is a wide variety of symptoms depending on how developed the disease is. Moreover, ===the symptoms listed below are typical of many other pelvic diseases. If they occur, urgent consultation with a doctor is necessary for an accurate diagnosis. The main symptoms of endometriosis=== are: - Irregular periods - Profuse bleeding during menstruation (hypermenorrhea) - Bleeding between periods - Strong pain during menstruation - Uterine bleeding during ovulation - Pain in the pelvic region, aggravated before menstruation - Pain in the lower abdomen during exercise or after sex - Weakness and fatigue - An increase in ESR and white blood cells in the blood - Prolonged fever - Difficulties with getting pregnant - Problems with feces (if the endometriosis affects the intestines) - Pain in the posterior area during urination. Treatment depends on the form, severity, and spread of endometriosis. Hormone therapy is often included. In some cases, surgery is required. ## What happens if you don’t treat it? When left untreated, endometriosis can lead to a number of negative consequences, including: - Infertility or spontaneous abortions - Malignant tumors - Chronic pain syndrome - Irregularities in the menstrual cycle - Hormonal imbalances - Neurological abnormalities. ## What tests can help diagnose endometriosis? Non-invasive diagnosis of endometriosis is often done through ultrasound, as well as CT or MRI scans. An endometrial biopsy is required before prescribing treatment and will be done at a hospital with the use of local anesthesia. Blood and urine tests are not used to detect endometriosis but may help reveal relevant issues. Keeping relevant test results available for visits to the gynecologist is highly recommended.
