Laboratory microscopic examination to detect abnormalities in cervical cells. The cytological smear evaluates the size, shape, number and location pattern of cells, which makes it possible to diagnose background, precancerous and malignant tumors of the cervix (cytological examination of biomaterial taken from the cervix (Pap staining, RAR test). Cytological screening for cervical cancer is performed on all women to detect pre-cancerous changes that can lead to the development of cancer, because if left untreated, many of them do not show symptoms.
Preparation for the study
- Abstinence from sexual intercourse 2-3 days before passing the smear, exclusion of the use of vaginal candles, tablets and creams. The tampon should not be used during menstruation
- Do not defecate on the day of the study, the day before you can wash your bowel movements only with warm water
- Refusal to urinate 2-3 hours before the study
- Stop using any vaginal tablets, therapeutic balls, candles for 1-2 days; do not take a smear after colposcopic tests and gynecological examinations
- The material is taken by a gynecologist or a specially trained specialist
Important notes
- When submitting a smear for cytological examination, it is necessary to fill out a special referral;
- Extraction of biomaterial from the urogenital tract is not carried out in children and women who have not had sexual intercourse, as well as in pregnant women
The study is recommended for women who have reached the age of majority, especially at risk. Every year, this study is recommended to be carried out by people of the following groups:
- women suffering from a disease such as cervical erosion;
- people with hypersensitivity to papilloma viruses;
- for women with cancer in their families.
The interpretation of the research result will contain the following information: the type of drug and the type of cytological analysis; the quality of the drug (may be recognized as adequate or insufficient); description of the sample — may be negative (if the cells under study are within normal limits) or, if a pathology is detected, the characteristics of the cells that
If the changes are not related to oncological processes, then the analysis description indicates which pathological cells or infectious agents (for example, microbial bodies) were found in the sample.
If in the case of cells that have become cancerous, the laboratory assistant indicates the nature of the detected changes: for example, on the blank you will see the abbreviation ASC ("atypical flat cells") or AGS ("atypical glandular cells"), with additional reference to the degree of dysplasia and other characteristics.
The attending physician should be consulted for detailed data and advice on the results of the study.
