8 Foods That Are the Most Difficult To Digest

## Fried pork This amount of fat will be broken down by the gastrointestinal tract for about three days. All other gastrointestinal functions will be severely reduced, which is fraught with problems with the gallbladder, pancreas, and gastric mucosa. ## Spicy foods Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese cuisines have a lot of dishes replete with spicy seasonings. Sometimes you can indulge yourself, but for the gastrointestinal tract, it is a huge stress. Along with the enzymes for breaking down the food itself, you also have to produce epithelial cells, so that the mucosa does not "burn." This is a slow process, which may be accompanied by severe heartburn and other unpleasant feelings. ## Legumes Legumes contain special carbohydrates — oligosaccharides — which are very slow to digest and in doing so stimulate excessive flatulence. It is possible to slightly reduce this effect if beans, chickpeas, and peas are soaked before cooking. But you should not overeat legumes (although they are an excellent source of vegetable protein). ## Raw onions Onions release essential oils that irritate the esophagus, and to a lesser degree the stomach and intestines. This also causes heartburn, and in people with sensitive mucosa, it can cause acid reflux, belching, and nausea. ## Cabbage Without exception, all varieties of cabbage contain raffinose — a hard-to-digest carbohydrate, and eating it raw causes digestive problems. The problem is solved simply by boiling, baking or stewing it to make it easy to digest. The drawback is that through this process it will lose most of its useful ingredients. ## Potatoes These are known for having the highest starch content, which binds everything that enters the stomach and makes digestion difficult. Ideally, potatoes are best eaten as a stand-alone dish. ## Chocolate This point primarily concerns people with a sweet tooth who can quickly eat a whole bar of chocolate or several pieces of chocolate cake without realizing it. The problem here is the sugar: all very sweet food takes a long time to digest, causing flatulence and overloading the pancreas. ## Chewing gum It would seem that we don't eat chewing gum, do we? You chew it and then spit it out. But the stomach is already deceived by the taste buds: now there will be dessert! And the next food arriving in the gastrointestinal tract meets enzymes there that can't digest it. Until the body figures out what's what, discomfort is almost inevitable.
