Are Ultrasounds Dangerous? Taking a Look at Some Common Myths

## Ultrasounds use radiation Radiation is used in X-rays and computed tomography. However, unlike these procedures, ultrasound scanning does not require exposure to radiation, as low-power sound waves are used in the process. These waves pose no threat to humans. ## Ultrasounds are dangerous for the unborn child The ultrasound helps to determine early pregnancy, to establish the exact timing, condition, and size of the fetus, and to identify or exclude the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. According to the World Health Organization, ultrasound is considered a highly safe procedure with few known side effects. However, the long-term effects of frequent ultrasound exposure on the fetus are not fully understood. Therefore, it is better to undergo these scans only when your doctor recommends it, and strictly for medical purposes. Ultrasounds should not be done only to obtain 3D images or video of the baby as a keepsake. ## Ultrasounds can lead to autism in a child Where does this myth come from? Over the past 20 years, doctors have increasingly diagnosed children with autism spectrum disorders. Additionally, the use of obstetric diagnostic ultrasound has increased. Therefore, many people mistakenly link these two trends. However, prenatal human exposure analysis has shown no harmful effects on newborns or children regarding school performance, attention deficit, or behavior change. ## Recurrent ultrasounds are harmful Ultrasound examinations should not be abandoned if health monitoring requires it. However, you should not be requesting excessive ultrasounds every week. The best advice is to follow the guidance of your doctors.
