8 Foods That Are the Most Difficult To Digest

But you should not overeat legumes (although they are an excellent source of vegetable protein). ## Raw onions Onions release essential oils that irritate the esophagus, and to a lesser degree the stomach and intestines. This also causes heartburn, and in people with sensitive mucosa, it can cause acid reflux, belching, and nausea. ## Cabbage Without exception, all varieties of cabbage contain raffinose — a hard-to-digest carbohydrate, and eating it raw causes digestive problems. The problem is solved simply by boiling, baking or stewing it to make it easy to digest. The drawback is that through this process it will lose most of its useful ingredients. ## Potatoes These are known for having the highest starch content, which binds everything that enters the stomach and makes digestion difficult. Ideally, potatoes are best eaten as a stand-alone dish. ## Chocolate This point primarily concerns people with a sweet tooth who can quickly eat a whole bar of chocolate or several pieces of chocolate cake without realizing it. The problem here is the sugar: all very sweet food takes a long time to digest, causing flatulence and overloading the pancreas. ## Chewing gum It would seem that we don't eat chewing gum, do we? You chew it and then spit it out. But the stomach is already deceived by the taste buds: now there will be dessert! And the next food arriving in the gastrointestinal tract meets enzymes there that can't digest it. Until the body figures out what's what, discomfort is almost inevitable.
