6 Science-Based Facts About the Importance of Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3 (also called niacin) is a water-soluble B vitamin. B3 is essential for the normal functioning of the digestive system and is also beneficial for blood circulation, the nervous system, and skin health. Vitamin B3 is easily destroyed by light, antibiotics, and alcohol. You should take a blood test to know whether you have normal level. ## Reduced stress Scientists from Keele University (UK) have found that vitamin B3 helps your brain overcome stress. ## Improved brain function B3 supports proper functioning of the brain, and a severe deficiency can lead to dementia. The National Institute on Aging (USA) found that getting enough B3 in the diet can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. ## Depression treatment Vitamin B3 is also involved in the conversion of the amino acid tryptophan into the neurotransmitter serotonin, which enhances the feeling of being in a good mood. Therefore, it is recommended to be used to fight against depression. ## Brain cancer fight Scientists at the University of Calgary, Canada, have found that when combined with chemotherapy, vitamin B3 helps immune cells attack glioblastoma (the most aggressive form of brain tumor), slowing the progression of the disease. ## Prevention of skin cancer Studies in Australia and New Zealand show that nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, may reduce the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer and actinic keratosis by protecting the skin from the harmful effects of sunlight. The vitamin is often used in cosmetics and anti-aging creams to help heal wounds, strengthen skin, and stimulate its ability to preserve moisture. ## Normalization of cholesterol levels In the United States, nicotinic acid has been used by physicians since the 1950s to raise the level of "good" cholesterol in patients, which helps fight the "bad" cholesterol. Despite all the benefits of vitamin B3, please make sure to speak with your doctor before taking it, and take any necessary tests to avoid possible negative effects.
