How Do You Treat a Chronic Runny Nose?
## Why does chronic runny nose appear?
The diagnosis "chronic sinusitis" is made when a [Chronic inflammatory process](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=78) localizes in the sinus cavities. There can be several reasons for this condition:
__Features of the anatomical structure of the nose__ and paranasal sinuses (narrowing of the channels connecting the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, a curvature of the nasal septum, hypertrophy of the nasal cavities).
__Decreased immunity__ due to severe infectious diseases or chronic pathological processes ([diabetes](https://ul.orna.me/KOge/librarydisease?id=43) mellitus and other endocrine diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, blood diseases, frequent use of antibiotics, etc.).
__Unfavorable living conditions__ or constant contact with dust or harmful substances, e.g. due to professional activities, may also influence it.
Foci of chronic infection in nearby areas (chronic tonsillitis, decayed teeth) may support the inflammatory process.
## Why doesn't it go away?
Generally, a chronic inflammatory process is caused by ===an imbalance of the upper respiratory tract microbiota. It's not that "invader" microorganisms settle in the body — in this case, the immune system "sees" and fights the invaders. The ratio of microorganisms that normally live on human mucous membranes is disturbed. Excessively active microflora begin to inhibit the growth of normal microflora, toxins accumulate, and microcirculation and lymph outflow are disturbed, which prevents the mucous membranes from recovering. As a result, the runny nose doesn’t go away.
## How to handle a runny nose
Avoid pouring vasoconstrictor drops into the nose. You should consult an ENT doctor, who will prescribe a course of treatment that is likely to include antibacterial agents. In addition, you will need to change your lifestyle to reduce the activity of opportunistic flora and create conditions more suitable for "good" microorganisms. Without this, even a few courses of antibiotics will give only temporary relief.
It is important to follow the principles of healthy nutrition to limit consumption of refined products (sugar, wheat flour), fats (semi-finished products, fast food), industrially produced dairy products with predominant fungal microflora, and to consume a sufficient amount of fiber.
Physical activity will ensure good blood circulation and activate lymph outflow. Gentle lymph drainage massage will also help.
It is also important to find opportunities for recreation and relaxation to reduce debilitating stress loads, which have a devastating effect on human immunity.
